Lewis County Family Resource Network Minutes of Meeting August 5, 2008

CAP; Andrea Thompson, Regional Tobacco Representative Mt. CAP; Tammy Boyles, Social Services for Jane Lew Apartments; Daisy Arbogast, Regional Aging Services; Barb Knicely, Adult Literacy; Charlene Knicely, Youth Representative; and Jacky Weeks, Director. Imogene Wimer & Ginny Ruble, absent for prior commitment; and Tracy Wine, Board Secretary, called in sick. Jacky took minutes for the meeting. The meeting was called to order at 12:10 pm. Minutes: The minutes for June were presented by Jacky. They were accepted for the record after review and appropriate changes. Sharpe Hospital – Becky Berlin asked to speak early in the meeting, since she would not be able to stay of the entire meeting. She stated Sharpe Hospital needs to get involved with the community and is looking for services in the local agencies and organizations to assist in projects for the hospital residents: - A green house to expand agriculture education, probably $10,000
- Build a ropes course and staff training (she suggested possible adult use for the community)
- Tobacco cessation and education will be need since the hospital campus will be tobacco free in May 2009.
She reported the senior aquatics program, with Becky as the instructor, has been a successful collaboration with senior center. She stated the Sharpe staff is low income in many cases and in need resource information. GarryLynne suggested MissionWV may be a source of funding, and several other sites for grants were mentioned. Jacky will make sure Becky is on the FRN listserve which all funding sources are distributed on a regular basis. Becky’s number at the hospital is 304-269-1210 x339 and the group is asked to contact her with information on possible grants she may be able to access.
Reports - Pantry Report – Charlene reported the pantry served 80 families/187 members in June and 74/180 in July. Sarah Leah Paugh reported Broad Run Baptist pantry has doubled in families in the last month. The only donations for the FRPantry in the last two months were paper goods from CURVES. One of the CURVES members contacted the office regarding additional contributions in the future. Donations have been down from the previous six months. Possible collection methods were discussed. Sarah agreed to join Bobbie Simons, Julia Spelsberg, and Cathy Coontz on the Pantry Board, replacing Melinda Law who resigned because of family commitments.
- Literacy – Barb Knicely has fourth story to add adult literacy program and will continue writing. GarryLynne expressed appreciation to the Literacy Council for the 1000 books donated to the senior center in Rose’s name. It was organized by the council through Don and Susan McNeil from New England who are providing books through out the East.
- World Café – Kerry and Andrea will be planning a new event for a September date to be announced after coordination with other involved groups. Carol Williams recommended the middle school students and the gymnasium for the event, to be followed by a dance. It will be discussed it at the next prevention coalition meeting, Thursday, the 14th at DHHR, noon. Andrea has the money in her program to pay for the event. The cost at the previous event was $20/head at Stonewall Resort for meal.
- Service Array – The group Jacky is a member of has completed the 108 page survey of existing services and will be reporting a summary at the next meeting, September 16th at 2:00pm at the Elkins DHHR. Anyone who wants to ride with Jacky or Paula Darby, please call the office, 269-4000.
- VISTA – Applications are still being taken and initial interviews have been held with two individuals. Five graduates have been recommended by Vickie Fahey of WV Jr. College and appoints will be made once they contact the office.
- Bobbie reported the Jamboree at the Mill went well.
- Oktoberfest – Bobbie explained to the new folks what the event is and asked for involvement from those interested. A list was sent around for sign-ups. Stonewall Jackson Memorial will be providing the food. The event will be held at the Armory, October 25th. There will not be a game that weekend for WVU. SJMH will also provided bicycles and helmets for door prizes. More door prizes will be needed.
Director’s Report
Jacky reported the Community Technology Grant for an FRN website was approved for $5000. The actual budget submitted was for over $6000, but Jacky expects to be able to reduce the costs of the site by buying the needed software through TechSoup, an online program for assistance to non-profits for technology needs. Information Sharing - Idress Gooden shared brochures on the Monday August 25th program on Stress Reduction being held at Stonewall Resort, part of the Summer Seminar for Licensed SW, Registered Nurses & LPNs, 8:30a – 4:00p. Jacky will send the information online to the FRN listserve.
- Tammy Boyles shared information on her job as social services director for Jane Lew Apartments. She offered the use of the community center at the apartments for any classes or events which agencies or organizations would like to hold in Jane Lew. Her number is 884-8929
