The literacy project places service emphasis on low-income, un-served, underserved socio-economic areas to ensure that families have the opportunity to improve their education through quality literacy curriculum. This Weston based project will focus on family literacy services which have been proven through research to increase school achievement and success in young adulthood, train others to teach youth and adults, build and expand curriculum, recruit volunteers, community service projects, research resources, fundraising, grant writing, capacity building, training modules, and organize meetings to promote literacy outreach. The Family Resource Network supports Adult and Youth Literacy by providing an AmeriCorps*VISTA worker for planning and coordination for Lewis County Literacy Programming. Each VISTA commits to a one-year, full-time assignment with a cost of living stipend and an education award at the end of the completed year. The FRN and the United Way of Central WV AmeriCorps*VISTA will be welcoming a new VISTA in December, Kyla Crowley of Palmyra, Virginia, a small town outside Charlottesville. This young, community service minded individual will be involved in literacy, including reading, math, science, and nutrition as well as bullying prevention.
